Michael Mann treated after accidental gun discharge at Los Angeles range

Key takeaways:

  • Mann’s representative said a holstered weapon accidentally discharged Saturday, causing a superficial injury.
  • Los Angeles police determined the shooting was accidental, NBC News reported.
  • Mann is developing “Heat 2,” an adaptation of the novel he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner.

Filmmaker Michael Mann was treated at a hospital after a gun accidentally discharged while holstered at a Los Angeles gun range Saturday, causing what his representative called a superficial injury. The 83-year-old director was being released from the hospital, the representative said Sunday.

“On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann,” the representative said in a statement. “He was treated and is being released.”

Mann had been practicing at the range when the accident occurred, according to his representative. He has been a target shooter for decades. CBS News reported that the accident happened at a sanctioned gun range.

Los Angeles police officers responded to a radio call reporting shots fired at the location Saturday and determined that the shooting was accidental, NBC News reported. A police spokesperson told NBC that the injured person was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. Officers completed an injury report and cleared the scene.

Mann is known for crime dramas including his 1981 feature debut, “Thief,” the 1986 thriller “Manhunter” and the 1995 film “Heat.” His other films include “Collateral” and, most recently, “Ferrari,” starring Adam Driver.

His work on “Heat” has also brought him back to the subject of gunfire. In a 2017 interview with Vulture, Mann said the film’s cast fired full-load blanks to capture the sound of gunfire rather than using edited sound effects.

“That’s the sound the weapons actually made and you couldn’t imitate or improve upon them,” Mann said. “It was terrifying as hell because we were in these glass and steel canyons and the gunfire reverberated in a certain real way, so they had an authenticity to the place that really was unique.”

Mann is developing “Heat 2,” according to both CBS News and NBC News. NBC reported that the project is an adaptation of a 2022 novel Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. CBS reported that filming is expected to begin early next year.
