Twelve people, including six children, were injured Saturday night in a shooting near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium as the school celebrated homecoming, Tallahassee police said. Three of the injured had serious injuries; the other nine were in stable condition.

Police said 11 of the 12 people injured were shot. The six children were all under 18, according to the department. No arrests had been reported.

The gunfire broke out about 8 p.m. at an intersection adjacent to the stadium, NBC News reported. A Florida A&M football game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff had been held there earlier in the evening. Police said their preliminary investigation indicated that a physical fight occurred before the shooting.

“Early findings indicate a physical altercation occurred prior to the shooting,” the Tallahassee Police Department said in a statement. Investigators asked witnesses to come forward as they continued to examine what happened.

Florida A&M said the shooting happened near, not on, its campus and that the campus remained safe. In a statement posted on X after the shooting, the university urged members of its community to avoid the area.

“Our hearts are with the victims and everyone affected by tonight’s incident on Perry Street,” the university said.

Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said no arrests had been made. He expressed sympathy for those injured and their families.

“Tonight, our thoughts are with the victims and their families as they face the devastating impact of this violence,” Revell said. “It is especially heartbreaking to know that children are among those injured.”

Florida State University, which NBC News reported is about a mile from Florida A&M, also issued an emergency alert. It said no one from its school community appeared to be involved in the shooting and advised its students, faculty and staff in the Tallahassee area to stay inside and remain alert as a precaution.

The shooting occurred amid Florida A&M’s annual homecoming celebrations, which included Saturday’s game at Bragg Memorial Stadium. Authorities had not announced an arrest or provided further details about what led from the reported fight to the gunfire.
