British police have charged two Iranian nationals over an alleged plot to target Manchester’s Jewish community ahead of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Rahman Salehi, 35, and Salam Ahmadyan, 36, are accused of preparing to commit an act of terrorism or assisting another person to commit one on or before September 20, 2026, police and prosecutors said. The men are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.

The two were arrested in Manchester’s Northern Quarter when thousands of British Jews were in synagogues, the BBC reported. Counterterrorism detectives said the men were alleged to have been in contact about the plot with a third party overseas who might be in Iran, according to NBC News.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the charges would be “deeply distressing” to the Jewish community. She also said that “both suspects arrived by small boat several years ago,” the BBC reported.

The charges concern an alleged plot; neither man has been convicted.
