Rep. Marcy Kaptur, the Ohio Democrat and longest-serving woman in Congress, was hospitalized Sunday after the vehicle she was riding in was struck in a hit-and-run crash in Toledo, police and her office said.
Kaptur, 80, was a passenger on her way to a church service when the crash occurred, her office said. She was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
“This morning Congresswoman Kaptur was a passenger in a vehicle on her way to a church service when the car she was traveling in was struck. She is active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries,” Ben Kamens, a spokesperson for Kaptur, said in a statement to NBC News.
Her office also told CBS News that Kaptur “expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.”
Toledo police said officers responded just before 11 a.m. local time to the area of Detroit Avenue and Central Avenue for what they described as a “hit-skip crash.” Two people, including Kaptur, were transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
Sgt. Mohamad Nasser, a spokesperson for the Toledo Police Department, said the investigation was still ongoing. Police said accident investigators responded to the scene and that the inquiry remains active. Authorities have not released additional details about the crash.
A witness told CBS affiliate WTOL 11 that the other driver was picked up by another vehicle and fled the scene shortly after the collision.
Kaptur has represented Ohio’s 9th Congressional District since 1983, after first winning election to the seat in 1982. NBC News reported that her district, which President Donald Trump won in 2020 and 2024, is routinely a top target for Republicans. Kaptur is running for re-election and won her 2024 race by less than 1 percentage point.
News of the crash drew public messages of support from both Democrats and Republicans.
“I’m praying for my colleague @RepMarcyKaptur after her crash this morning. May she be restored to full health in short order,” Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., wrote on X.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., also posted support for Kaptur. “This is so horrible. I’m sending well wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery to my friend, Rep. Marcy Kaptur, and I hope the person who did this is found quickly,” she wrote.
Rep. Dave Taylor, an Ohio Republican, said on X, “My thoughts are with @RepMarcyKaptur after hearing the news of this morning’s car crash in Toledo. Charity and I are wishing her a speedy recovery.”
Other Ohio political figures also sent well-wishes. Kathleen Clyde, chair of the Ohio Democratic Party, wrote, “Sending love and well wishes for a speedy recovery to Rep. @Marcy_Kaptur and am grateful to the first responders who helped all those involved today get the care that they needed and who serve our communities every day.”
Republican Sen. Jon Husted said he and his wife were praying for Kaptur’s speedy and full recovery. “We hope the person responsible for this reckless act is apprehended quickly and held accountable,” he said.
