Investigation Continues into Disappearance of Nancy Guthrie with Limited New Leads and $1 Million Reward Offered

Nearly seven weeks after Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing from her Tucson home, authorities continue to investigate her suspected abduction with limited new leads. Guthrie, 84, was last seen on the evening of January 31, and her disappearance was reported on February 1. Despite extensive efforts, including the review of surveillance footage and forensic analysis, the case remains unsolved.

Law enforcement officials recently obtained additional images from surveillance cameras installed around Guthrie’s residence. These cameras, positioned on a fence overlooking the back of the house and near the driveway and garage, captured various family members, landscapers, and pool workers in the weeks leading up to the disappearance. However, investigators found no suspicious activity or images of the suspect beyond the doorbell camera footage released by the FBI on February 10. That video remains the only known visual of the masked individual believed to be involved.

Retired FBI supervisory special agent Lance Leising told CBS News that the lack of meaningful leads complicates the investigation, noting that it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain momentum as time passes. Authorities are analyzing DNA recovered from the scene and employing forensic genetic genealogy, a technique that has helped solve other high-profile cases. Leising cautioned that this process can be time-consuming and may require investigating multiple potential suspects within the same DNA family.

The Guthrie family has expressed deep gratitude to the Tucson community for their support and urged residents not to forget Nancy’s case. In a message to local media, the family requested that community members review any camera footage, journal notes, text messages, or observations related to key dates around January 11, January 31, and February 1. They emphasized that even seemingly minor details could prove crucial. The family has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s safe return, while the FBI has added a $50,000 reward. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has indicated that some of Nancy Guthrie’s blood was found on the porch, and investigators believe she was targeted in a deliberate crime. As the search continues, neighbors have left flowers and notes of encouragement at her home, and the family remains focused on finding her and bringing her home.
