Pop star Britney Spears has voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility after her March arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence in Ventura County, California, a representative confirmed. The representative did not disclose further details about the location or nature of the treatment. TMZ initially reported that Spears entered a U.S. rehab center for substance abuse, citing sources with direct knowledge.

Spears, 44, was taken into custody on March 4 after California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a speeding vehicle on the 101 Freeway. Upon locating the car, officers observed signs of impairment and conducted field sobriety tests, leading to her arrest. She was released early the following day. Authorities have not yet released the results of any chemical tests administered after the arrest.

At the time of the arrest, Spears’ representative described the incident as “completely inexcusable” and expressed hope that it would mark “the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.” The statement added, “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

Spears has faced public concern in recent months over her frequent social media posts, which often feature her dancing alone at her California home. One such video showed her dancing with knives, which she later clarified were not real. Her most recent post was a dancing video shared on a Saturday, while another photo posted on Friday included the caption: “When peeps try to make you larger than life … tell them to BOW. If I ever showed them the fragility of my real heart.”

The singer rose to fame in the late 1990s and was widely regarded as the “Princess of Pop.” Her career has included highly publicized struggles, such as a 2007 incident where she was photographed with a shaved head hitting a car with an umbrella. Spears was under a 13-year conservatorship that controlled her personal and financial decisions until a Los Angeles judge ended it in 2021 following a legal battle.

Since the conservatorship ended, Spears has remained active on social media and published a memoir titled “The Woman in Me” in 2023. She last performed publicly in 2018 during her “Piece of Me” tour, which occurred during the conservatorship period. Spears shares two adult sons with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline.

CBS has reached out to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office to determine if Spears’ decision to enter rehab will impact her upcoming court date scheduled for May 4.
