On Tuesday, a judge sentenced Charles Adelson, 47, to life in prison for the 2014 murder of his former brother-in-law, Daniel Markel. Adelson was found guilty last month of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the killing.

Markel, a law professor at Florida State University, had divorced Adelson’s sister and had two children with her. Prosecutors presented evidence of wiretaps and secretly recorded conversations that implicated Adelson in the murder.

The judge also sentenced Adelson to 30 consecutive years on the lesser counts. The first-degree murder charge carries a penalty of life without the possibility of parole, according to a judgment from the Second Judicial Circuit Court in Leon County.

Adelson maintained his innocence during the sentencing. “I would just like to say that I maintain my innocence,” he said.

The case has drawn attention to the bitter custody dispute between Markel and Adelson’s sister. Markel’s death has left his two children without a father, and Adelson’s life sentence serves as a reminder of the tragedy of the situation.
