Ukraine has made its first battlefield gains since the launch of its counteroffensive against Russian forces, claiming the liberation of several villages in the eastern Donetsk region.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said its military had retaken three villages located in the “Vremivka ledge”, a section of the front line where the Russian-controlled area protrudes into territory held by Ukraine. On Monday, the 35th brigade posted video of soldiers raising the blue and yellow national flag over the retaken village of Storozheve.

Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar wrote on Telegram that Ukraine’s flag was again flying over the village of Storozhov, and she predicted the liberation of “all Ukrainian land” would be the final outcome.

The Ukrainian military has been making progress in its stepped-up counteroffensive operations against Moscow’s more than 15-month invasion of Ukraine. However, the gains made so far are small-scale successes and it remains to be seen if they will be enough to turn the tide of the conflict.

The Ukrainian government has called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia to end its aggression in the region. The United Nations has estimated that the conflict has caused the displacement of more than 1.5 million people and the death of over 13,000 since 2014.
