Fulgence Kayishema, a suspect in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, was arrested in South Africa on Wednesday after 22 years on the run. The arrest was made in a joint operation by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) and South African authorities.

Kayishema is alleged to have orchestrated the killing of more than 2,000 people at the Nyange church in Rwanda during the 100 days of the genocide. The attack is considered one of the most brutal acts of the genocide.

The IRMCT said Kayishema was arrested in Paarl, a small town in a wine-making region about 30 miles east of Cape Town. He is the latest suspect to be apprehended by the tribunal’s fugitive tracking team, which has been working to bring those responsible for the Rwandan genocide to justice.

The 1994 Rwandan genocide was a mass slaughter of ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus by members of the Hutu majority. An estimated 800,000 people were killed in the 100-day period of violence, making it one of the worst genocides in modern history.

The arrest of Kayishema is a major step forward in the effort to bring those responsible for the genocide to justice. The IRMCT is continuing its investigation into the Rwandan genocide and is committed to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their crimes.
