The officer had mistaken the child for a suspect in a string of car thefts, and the department has apologized for the incident and is conducting an internal investigation. Social media users have called for the officer to be held accountable for his actions.

Body of Missing 2-Year-Old Girl Found in Detroit, Investigation Now a Homicide

The body of 2-year-old Wynter Cole-Smith, who was reported missing in Lansing, Michigan, over the weekend, has been found in Detroit. Lansing Police Chief Ellery Sosebee has confirmed the case has moved from a missing child case to a homicide investigation. The Lansing Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating any witnesses or video surveillance footage related to the case, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses.
