Newport News School Board Votes to Remove Superintendent Following Teacher Shooting Incident

The Newport News School Board in Virginia has voted to remove district superintendent George Parker III following the shooting of a teacher by a 6-year-old student. The decision was made in response to community demands for accountability, and Parker will be replaced by Michele Mitchell. He had been praised for his efforts to improve school safety and reduce the achievement gap, and his removal is seen as a major setback for the district.

Newport News Public Schools Superintendent Reveals School Official Was Notified of Possibility of Weapon Prior to Shooting of Teacher

On January 6, a 6-year-old student shot a first-grade teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, VA. Superintendent George Parker revealed that a school official was notified of the possibility of a weapon in the student's possession prior to the shooting, but the weapon was not seized. The teacher is in stable condition and the student is being held at a juvenile detention center. The Newport News Police Department and the school system are both conducting investigations into the incident.
