Illinois 2026 Democratic Senate Primary Becomes Key Test of Gov. Pritzker’s Influence and Party’s Immigration Enforcement Stance

The 2026 Democratic primary race in Illinois to succeed retiring Senator Dick Durbin has emerged as a significant test of Governor JB Pritzker’s political influence and the Democratic Party’s stance on immigration enforcement, particularly regarding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The contest features three prominent candidates: Lieutenant Governor Julianna Stratton, and Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly. Each candidate has pledged opposition to the Trump administration’s immigration policies but differs in their approach to reforming or dismantling ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Immigration enforcement has become a central issue for Illinois voters following the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration crackdown in the Chicago area, known as “Operation Midway Blitz,” which resulted in controversial arrests and community protests. All three candidates advocate abolishing ICE, though with varying degrees of intensity. Stratton supports shuttering ICE and prosecuting agents who have broken the law, calling for a “total revamp” of immigration enforcement that prioritizes immigration judges and community-based social services. Kelly has taken a more radical stance, advocating for the dismantling of ICE, Border Patrol, and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), describing the current system as “broken.” Krishnamoorthi aligns closely with Stratton on ICE reform, opposing funding for ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and supporting increased oversight measures such as body cameras and third-party investigations into the use of force by agents.

The race also highlights the influence of outside spending and campaign financing. Krishnamoorthi has significantly outspent his opponents, with nearly $29 million spent on advertisements since July 2025, bolstered by approximately $10 million from the Fairshake super PAC, funded by Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and executives from Coinbase. This super PAC supports pro-crypto candidates and opposes those perceived as anti-crypto, such as Stratton, who has been endorsed by Senator Elizabeth Warren and backed by Governor Pritzker. Pritzker has contributed over $5 million to the Illinois Future PAC, which has spent nearly $15 million supporting Stratton and attacking Krishnamoorthi. The financial backing from Pritzker underscores his role as a key powerbroker in Illinois politics and serves as a potential indicator of his influence ahead of his 2026 gubernatorial re-election campaign and possible 2028 presidential ambitions.

The primary also reflects broader ideological and tactical divisions within the Democratic Party, including debates over immigration policy, the party’s approach to confronting the Trump administration, and the balance of power between progressives and moderates. While all three candidates position themselves as opponents of former President Trump, their messaging varies, with Krishnamoorthi emphasizing accountability, Stratton condemning Trump’s leadership style, and Kelly focusing on economic issues such as the cost of living.
