Alabama Teen Survivor Advocates for Shark Attack Alert System to Enhance Coastal Safety

An Alabama teenager who survived a shark attack last year is advocating for a proposed alert system aimed at enhancing public safety in coastal waters. The proposal, introduced by Republican Representative David Faulkner, seeks to establish a notification system similar to the Amber Alert. This system would inform the public of any unprovoked shark attacks occurring nearby, providing timely warnings to beachgoers.

The teenager, Lulu Gribbin, who was one of three individuals bitten by a shark on June 7, 2024, during a series of attacks off the Florida Panhandle, addressed Alabama lawmakers on Wednesday. She urged them to support the proposed legislation, emphasizing the potential benefits of such an alert system in preventing future incidents. Gribbin highlighted the proximity of another attack that occurred just 90 minutes before her own, underscoring the need for timely alerts.
