Every Body” Documentary Brings Attention to Intersex Community and the Need for Greater Representation and Visibility

A new documentary released in theaters Friday, “Every Body,” follows three powerful voices in the intersex community, a group of individuals who have a combination of male and female biological traits. The documentary brings attention to a community that, despite representing an estimated 1.7% of the global population, has been largely unrepresented in popular culture.

The film follows River Gallo, an actor and filmmaker who uses they/them pronouns, and two other intersex activists. It asserts that their lives have been dictated and weaponized by conservative forces in the medical community and, more recently, by politicians legislating transgender children’s rights.

Gallo said that allowing a film crew to follow them around for a year and a half was a strange experience. “For a trans kid or a gay kid, they can’t tell you they’re gay or trans until they can vocalize those feelings,” Gallo said. “And I think that’s what this film does. It allows people to vocalize their feelings and to be seen and heard.”

The documentary also features interviews with intersex activists from around the world, as well as medical experts, to provide an in-depth look at the intersex experience. It is an important reminder that, while the LGBTQ+ community has made strides in recent years, there is still much work to be done to ensure that all voices are heard and respected.

“Every Body” is a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and visibility for all members of the LGBTQ+ community. It is a testament to the strength and resilience of the intersex community, and a call to action for greater understanding and acceptance of all gender identities.
